Liz Almond
Neurodiversity Health and Wellbeing Coach & Therapist
Welcome to Insightful Minds – Neurodiversity Health and Wellbeing Coach & Therapist. My name is Liz Almond and I’m here to support you on your journey to a better, more empowered life.
My Story
I’ve had a challenging journey in life, filled with anxiety, poor self esteem and confidence issues. I have a twin sister who was very academically minded who I compared myself too right from birth. As a daughter of parents who were teachers, I never quite felt good enough and that drove me to gaining lots more qualifications than I really needed. I also didn’t feel that I fitted in at school and only had a handful of friends.
In 1996, I had an accident at work and this lead me to have two years off work and to develop chronic pain syndrome. I had severe pain in my lower back left knee. Being off work was isolating but I tried to stay motivated and enrolled on several holistic therapy courses to try to help reduce my pain. This turned into a passion of mind and now I’m a holistic therapy trainer, therapist and coach – I train others in Reiki, the Balance Procedure, Meditation and Neuro Linguistic Programming and support them to become more empowered around their mental health and confidence issues which are affecting their health.
During my journey of recovery, I first used Access to Work in 2002 when I worked for an IT training company. I was given £6000 to upgrade my car to be an automatic so that I could drive on the M25 with less pain and £500 towards a professional back chair. It made to world of difference. Getting back to full time work was challenging and I was taking heavy painkillers which really challenged me to stay focused at work.
Following redundancy from this position, I became a lecturer at an FE college and after a few years became Associate Head of School for Busines. As time went on, I became head of Teaching and Learning. It was a very stressful job and I hid my anxiety well. In 2011, I took voluntary redundancy and it didn’t go terribly well starting my own coaching/therapy business.
All within my first 18 months of business, my redundancy money ran out, I had 2 rounds of IVF, my husband got sick and almost died, my parents were involved in a serious car crash, my Mum died, my cat died the same week my Mum died, my sister in law died in her sleep and our debt racked up to £38000. My husband then left me to be able to have a child with someone else. I seriously thought about ending everything. My mental health was shot to pieces due to trauma.
I should have been given Access to Work support at this time, but didn’t realise that I could have it or that I had undiagnosed PTSD, dyscalculia and ADHD.
Over the following 10 years, I’ve turned my life around, I applied the techniques I have learnt from holistic therapies on myself and healed sabotaging patterning around my self worth and confidence. I have got out of the extreme debt I was in and have inspired many people to turn their lives around and to see the learnings they have made and to stop self sabotaging their success and wealth. I’ve published a best selling book called ‘Are you worth it? a spiritual guide to managing your money mindset.’
In 2022, I was working for a charity and faced issues due to my neurodivergent qualities. Working with a particular boss stressed me out. I also could not hear on phone calls properly as I didn’t have Bluetooth on my hearing aids. I applied to Access to Work again and was awarded Coaching for my Dyscalculia and mental health support. This coaching was transformational and lead me to the path I’m on today in helping others with Access to Work applications and coaching/therapy.
Why I Do This
Having had my own Access to Work journey, I realised that for 10 years I’ve been working with clients who should have been accessing support through Access to Work but have been missing out. I’ve also missed out on potential income as I hadn’t realised I could support my clients this way. My debt would have been sorted out sooner. I’m currently enlightening my clients about what is available, filling in their applications and delivering Workplace coping strategy coaching and training as they get funding.
Being self employed allows me not to be told what to do and to be as creative as I want without being stopped by anyone else’s preconceived ideas. I obviously work within the remits of health and safety law, safeguarding and professional standards set by my Professional bodies. I can also take time off to rest, recuperate as I have a tendency to work too hard and have burnout in the past. I do my very best to practice what I preach.
My Access to Work experience is lived experience of going through applications and receiving funding a few times. I’ve filled in multiple applications. Most have been for those with complex conditions including neurodiversity. I am a SEN assessor and bring this knowledge into writing applications. I have been coaching for over 20 years but only through Access to Work for 6 months as I have my own private practice.
What I offer
- Applications for Access to Work (£75 for 1.5 hours together on Zoom)
- Workplace Coping Strategy Coaching/Training which includes mindset coaching and use of some therapeutic models as often my clients are already coaches/therapists themselves. Our Journey Together
For the application process, I ask for you to fill in a questionnaire before completing the application. This means that you are more prepared for completing your application and can use this when an assessor rings you. I bring my specialist knowledge of business, team work, and SEN experience as well as lived neurodivergent experience into your application.
From a coaching/training perspective, I’m supporting you to become more empowered and to find your own answers. I have a wide toolkit of modalities to use with you if one method is not suiting you. We are working together as a team for you to overcome limiting beliefs, negative emotions and patterning which are sabotaging your success. Where training needs are identified, we then look at what you don’t know whether that is how to communicate in a situation, how to deal with confrontation, how to plan, how to write an email, the list is endless.
Most of my clients have multiple issues going on illness as well as being neurodivergent. They may well be coaches, healers, consultants, and tend to have issues such as fatigue, menopause, chronic pain, ME, Fibromyalgia, etc. Often they are ADHD/Autistic and are perfectionists or people pleasers.
My Approach
I’m empathic, intuitive and go at your own pace. Have a very diverse skillset, am very experienced and can tap into what you need when you need it. I suit micro business. Solopreneurs – healers, coaches, consultants, support worker type businesses, etc. I can use a very coach questioning approach for you to get your own answers or a more floaty spiritual approach to help guide you on your way so that you resolve issues which are causing you stress and anxiety. The oracle cards/tarot can even come out if you would like them.
